Key to human origins artifacts

There are thousands of prehistoric Human Archaeological sites that tell the story of how we came to dominate the landscape of our home planet Earth. The team at Gignos thinks it’s of the utmost importance that we uncover the mysteries of how we got here and why we are the way we are. These insights are crucial for understanding our world today and the world of the future on this planet and beyond.

Challenges

Project challenges

  • Business objectives
  • Project issues

Gignos is a non-profit. Therefore, the success of this project depends largely on the interest of world institutions and researchers. They needed a robust project base that would help unite all buffs of history and archaeology around it.

Through their donations, Gignos will be able to sustainably run the website and continue to expand its feature set. And for partner organizations that help expand the Gignos Encyclopedia, they even plan to provide grant funding.

The Social Mission of Gignos: Imagine the impact it has on archaeology and humanity as a whole. Our team was happy and excited at the same time. To share such a responsibility and to be part of something enormous.

  • Engineering of a strong system for storing data and searching among them
  • Implement a smart research system to enable users quickly and hassle-free to find information among over 1 million entries

Management

Project
management

Scrum is a management framework where one or more cross-functional, self-organized teams create a product in stages. First, we worked on the preparation of website design, initial DevOps, business analysis, and then slowly jumped into WordPress development and Quality Assurance stages.

Dedicated Gotoinc team

  • Project Manager
  • Business Analytic
  • Ruby on Rails Developer
  • Quality Assurance Engineer

Roadmap

  • Code optimization
    1 month
  • Global search scope
    3 months
  • AWS migration
    2 months
  • Media scope
    4 months
  • Quality Assurance
    4 months

In the first weeks, we focused on eliminating potential bugs and conflicts. This is necessary since we didn’t start the project from scratch.

During the code overview, 1355 changed files were found. Our development team tested each of them and fixed errors. Also, updated all project technologies.

At the following stage we worked on the solutions to implement the Smart search. Here are the key scope objectives we solved:

  • Added Global Search, Related Search and Autocomplete functions.
  • Created Smart information filtering and Search in Filters.
  • Integrated the system with GeoCoder and Mapbox geoservices.
  • Created functions for adding and storing a list of references.
  • Developed markup for the new functions.

The project system needed the optimal inexpensive cloud solution. That will be reliable, scalable and we pay only for what we really use.

With that in mind Gotoinc team conduct deep benchmarking and migrated the system from Heroku to AWS Amazon cloud computing services.

Here the main efforts were focused on the development of adding and storing different types of media. In this case, we used the following Amazon Web Services:

  • Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)
  • Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)
  • Relational Database Service (RDS)

We really care about the quality. This why our QA engineer regularly performed several types of testing at once:

  • Functional and Non-Functional Testing — every day.
  • Changed Related Testing — every week.
  • For each new function, an average of about 30 test cases were written.
  • Autotests are written for all functions.

Tech stack we used

  • Javascript
  • Ruby on Rails
  • Linux
  • jQuery
  • Zephyr
  • Cypress.io
  • Github
  • Jira
